Our Story

After graduating from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA, Mike Doherty fulfilled a lifelong dream of being a homebuilder by accepting a position in the Houston Area as a Building Superintendent for Dollar Homes. In 1978 Mike incorporated his own company, E.K.I.M., Inc., dba Mike Doherty Homes and started building in Southwest Houston. In 1980 he was invited to bring his building program into Pecan Grove Plantation where he enjoyed a successful 13 year building career in their speculative and custom programs. The custom program expanded to building on individuals’ property in Fort Bend County and Wharton County.

A new development in the early 1980’s by Mr. Bruce Belin, named “Weston Lakes”, broke ground in Fulshear, TX and Mike was hired by Mr. Belin to build the Guard House, Entrance, and the Sales Information Center and Phase I of Weston Lakes Country Club which he successfully completed to everyone’s satisfaction. Shortly thereafter another major development by Mr. Belin broke ground on Lake Conroe and Mr. Belin again hired Mike Doherty to build the Guard House, Entrance and Sales Information Center in “Bentwater on Lake Conroe”.

About this time, Pecan Grove Plantation was nearing completion of its custom program and Mike saw a market in Montgomery County servicing the “soon to retire” and “retirement” markets around Lake Conroe and Montgomery County. In 1990 Mike moved his building company to Conroe and subsequently enjoyed 15 years of “Build On Your Lot” success in many lakefront communities around Lake Conroe plus building in several acreage and ranch settings.

In 2002, Mike Doherty Homes was hired by a Houston production building company to develop a custom home and build on your lot division for the company. Mike Doherty Homes took a break in building to implement this program that successfully built 40+ homes on individual’s property ranging in price from $300,000.00 to over $l Million. This start-up program was completed in 2006 and Mike resumed building full time for Mike Doherty Homes, Inc.

After 35+ years of building, Mike concentrates on 3 or 4 very nicely appointed homes per year on property owned by individuals.
